TYLER & ASHOKA PHAN
Kinder Kin-Der is a mixed-medium piece constructed by polaroid shot by Ashoka Phan and painted by Tyler Phan. It archives daily healing and kinship practices from the lens of a multicultural landscape in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Some of the polaroids are placed in the traditional “red envelopes” (lì xì) found in East and Southeast Asia and gifted during Lunar New Year.
Tyler Phan is a professor of anthropology, focusing on structures of power in medicine and health with regional focus in the United States, Vietnam, and Bhutan. Addition to anthropology, Tyler is an acupuncturist and fifth-generation traditional medicine practitioner. Ashoka Phan is a 9-year-old student at Community Day School. He loves cats, burritos, and Vietnamese ramen (Mì). He loves making movies of cats and playing various video games.
